Welcome to this website developed by the Australian Cardijn Institute and the Centre International Cardijn.

Looking at the three themes of the Synod on Synodality 2021-24, i.e. Communion, Participation and Mission, we propose to share a series of relevant texts from Joseph Cardijn, founder of the Young Christian Workers and Council Father at Vatican II, as well as other texts and documents that develop that tradition.

Mission and participation were in fact two of Cardijn’s key concepts – the mission of each human person of whatever religion or whatever state in life to participate in God’s work of creation and redemption in the world.

Although he never used the word “communion” in the sense that this term gained at the Second Vatican Council, he viewed the specifically lay apostolate of lay people that he emphasised so often and so powerfully as a mission developed in deep partnership with the ministry of the priest.
